Happy Showa Day!

20160429_1

Showa Day celebrates the birthday of the previous Emperor of Japan, but now it is significant as the first day of “Golden Week” in Japan. Many people take a week or so off from work during this time of “Golden Week” where people celebrate Constitution Memorial Day, Children’s Day, and other holidays all together. The higher number of visitors who can be seen enjoying the many aspects of the Park makes it apparent that the Holidays have started for many. Some people were picnicking, bird watching, taking a stroll on the trails and many family groups were using the newly re-opened East Observation Blind.

The new blind offers many more observation openings for viewers to use with their own binoculars and scopes, or you can use the free scopes provided. Helpful wooden steps placed below the scopes offer a little “leg up” for those who need it. There are also handy new desks/platforms and lockable openings that can be opened, as needed.
Today was quite windy but very sunny. Many of the birds had to sit facing into the gusty winds in order to avoid being knocked down or blown off their resting spot. Watching the waders bouncing up and down on the surface of the rough waters, they seemed to be resting with their heads tucked under their wings. But it made me wonder, are they kicking their feet vigorously underwater to stay in place or do they tuck in their legs too?
