Reedbed management

The staff continue to aggressively cut the reedsin the East freshwater pond. In the summer months, the Little Grebes andOriental Reed Warbler were actively using the area for breeding and foraginghabitat so it was off limits. It is in this season, when transitioning betweenbreeding and before the arrival of wintering waterfowl, that the staff are in arush to accomplish the Reed Bed Management. The staff must make way for theducks. Interestingly, it is important to leave some areas of high reeds inorder to provide cover for the ducks, when the Goshawks are hunting. Otherwisethe waterfowl are quite literally “sitting ducks” in a trap with no escape fromthe hungry predatory birds. It wouldn’t make for a very sustainable Bird Parkif it was simply a buffet for Goshawks.
